Outdoor activities and events are abundant throughout the year.  Many facilities in Carter County offer events and programs specifically for retires and seniors.  Elizabethton’s Senior Citizens Center is located on East G Street.  The center not only offers transportation and daily lunches; but several programs and activities as well.  Some of these include: aerobics, shopping, recreational trips, exercise equipment, billiards and many others.
 
A wide range of healthcare services are available, physicians, pharmacies, dental, rehabilitation and ophthalmology, with a state of the art Hospital. Sycamore Shoals Hospital (SSH), located in Elizabethton, Tennessee, is a 121-bed nonprofit hospital dedicated to providing a lifetime of quality, patient-centered health care. SSH provides inpatient and outpatient medical/surgical services, a 24-hour emergency department, a Family Birth Center, Level II Nursery, and Women's diagnostic Center.
SSH is fully accredited by The Joint Commission and serves the East Tennessee counties of Carter, Johnson, Sullivan and Unicoi and surrounding counties in North Carolina. The caring staff is committed to providing superior care and utilizing up-to-date products and services to meet the community's needs.
 
Franklin Health and Fitness Center also offers a wide variety of activities at a special discounted rate for retires and seniors.  Some of the programs offered at the Franklin Fitness Center include; Yoga, Pilates and Aerobics classes, steam rooms and saunas, Message Therapy and Personal Trainers.
